To F1 fans and motorsport fans alike, Ayrton Senna Da Silva requires very little introduction. Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1960, Ayrton Senna was a Formula One racing driver who rose through the single seater ranks from an early age and went on to become a three time F1 world champion. Ayrton competed in F1 from 1984 up until his tragic death at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994 aged only 34 years old.

During his F1 career he drove for Toleman, Lotus, McLaren and Williams and he won his three world championships with the McLaren F1 team in 1988, 1990 and 1991 where his rivalry with his nemesis, Alain Prost, became legendary – although in later years, once Alain had retired from the sport, they became friends and developed a mutual respect for one another. Even in his early years with Tolman and Lotus, Ayrton demonstrated a level of skill behind the wheel which, according to many, far exceeded the capabilities of his machinery at the time. Most notably, his masterful drive with Toleman at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1984 where he finished in second place having started on the grid in 13th position. Had the race not been controversially red flagged due to torrential rain, Senna would undoubtedly have overtaken Prost in the closing stages to take his first F1 win. Since this first podium, Ayrton went on to achieve unrivalled success in the sport, breaking numerous records along the way. He continued to demonstrate his unique driving abilities throughout his career, not least, at another rain drenched race at the European Grand Prix held at Donnington Park in 1993. During this race, he simply dominated the field and his first lap, again in torrential conditions, has become since known as the ‘Lap of the Gods’ – arguably, one of the greatest ever drives in Formula One history.

A lot more praise could be bestowed on this racing genius, not least for his kind and philanthropic nature away from the circuit. However, one thing is for certain – Senna was, and still is, the inspiration for so many drivers that have entered the world of motorsport and aspire to becoming F1 drivers even today. Since his untimely departure, Ayrton Senna continues to be an icon of the sport, not only in his home country of Brazil but globally. Without doubt, he would have gone on to achieve even greater success had he not succumbed to his injuries at the Tamburello corner, Imola on that fateful day. Was he the greatest driver ever? Obviously, it was a different era and a lot has changed in the sport since he achieved his success, not least the vast improvements in safety that came largely as a result of F1’s ‘black weekend’. To answer this question in all honesty, we think so… or, at least, he would certainly be sharing this trophy with one of his greatest admirers… Sir Lewis.
